A lot of railroads in the US (rather sensibly) parallel the main highways so you often get a chance to see a train or two whilst driving. Whilst this sounds ideal and many trains were sighted on the trip up from Texas and into New Mexico, the weather sadly didn't play ball at the appropriate time! However I was anticipating fitting some photing in on the Trans-Continental mainline which runs through Arizona and New Mexico amongst others, and I was delighted to learn that the forecast for Thursday 27th March was sunny all day, so an early start was made on our next leg from Albuquerque, NM, to Flagstaff, AR. As we drove along Interstate 40 (the former Route 66) and approached the area for photography, this freight train was sighted running in the same direction, with us just ahead. I knew roughly a location that would be on so made a quick dive off the Interstate and got into position with time to spare as the train took a slight detour from its usual straight route to negotiate some underlation in the terrain.
